Senior Citizen Seeking Employment It may not be on the front pages of the papers just now, but its a hard reality that the average retirement age in the United States has been creeping higher and higher, to the point where its now closer to 67 than 65 â€" long past the days of summer job searches, and into the phase of life when college savings plans are set up for grandchildren, not children. Whether youre exactly 65, or a bit older or younger, there are many reasons to consider remaining in â€" or rejoining â€" the workplace: Company loyalty. Studies have shown that older workers feel stronger connections to their companies they work for, and genuinely enjoy interacting with both customers and colleagues, but hearsay says that customers also appreciate dealing with mature employees. Having a job keeps you connected to the world, and gives you motivation. In the words of Kathi Brown, a knowledge-management specialist with AARP, going to work gives you, …a reason to get out of bed in the morning. Finances. Staying in the workforce certainly keeps money flowing, whether you need the cash to live or just want extra cash to spoil your spouse, take trips, or help a child pay off their direct student loans. Connection. By keeping a job, you stay connected to the goings-on in your community. With all the benefits of keeping or finding a job as a mature adult, there are still challenges that must be faced: Many employers are resistant to flexible scheduling or job-sharing â€" two strategies that are ideal for older workers. Retail can be physically taxing, for those who arent accustomed to being on their feet for long periods of time. Age discrimination is still a problem â€" theres a very low percentage of workers aged 65 and over who have been in their current job for less than two years. If you are a person of a certain age, and looking for work, what can you do? There are several options. If money isnt an issue, and you just want to get out of the house and keep your mind moving, consider volunteering at a library or museum, if money is an object, there are job-search sites that offer great help to people of all ages, from the ability to post resumes, to managing the contacts you already have and helping you build broader networks â€" its never too late to expand your circles, after all. As well, organizations like AARP offer special programs for mature adults seeking career changes. One such program is their Senior Community Service Employment Program, which works with staffing services to place adjunct faculty and substitute teachers in much of the United States, and they also have a program in partnership with Home Depot, which values the experience older workers can bring. Finding a new job is more difficult when youre at or over the traditional retirement age, but not impossible if you take advantage of the services that exist to help. Handling the Panel Interview Part 1 A panel interview consists, as you might imagine, of a group of interviewers instead of a single person.   The panel interview is a time-saving method for companies who wish to have several representatives from different parts of the company see a candidate.   Instead of scheduling several interviews over a period of days or weeks, the company reps can all see the candidate at once.   They also have the advantage of seeing the candidate at the same time and hearing the question responses in the same context. The panel interview is also helpful if the position will report to several managers or when a team will all have a say in candidate selection.   Some companies believe that a diverse panel can make better hiring decisions and provide more balanced feedback on candidates. You should never be surprised by a panel interview; it’s one of the questions you can ask when scheduling the meeting: “Can you tell me who I’ll be meeting with?”   Try to take notes if your scheduler actually gives you names and titles.   You can look up these individuals on the company website or search for information on them on social networking sites like LinkedIn ®.   At the very least, you can rehearse how to pronounce their names and commit their roles in the company to memory. First and Last Impressions Matter the Most One of the most important moments in the interview is the introductions, and it can be the most stressful (especially if you’re not good with names.)   So if you have notes on who’s who, it can be a big help.    As you meet each panel member, offer a firm handshake and use their names as you greet them.   Sometimes, each panelist will give you a business card at the beginning of the meeting.   If that’s the case, arrange them as they are seated across from you.   If not, ask if you can take some notes, and subtly jot their names down in order. Most panel interviews will offer the chance for each interviewer to ask a question (or several.)   When you begin your answer, start by making eye contact with the person who asked the question.   Then, as you expand your answer, take in the others around the table.   Be prepared for other follow  up questions from other panelists.   It’s great if you can include other panelists and previous questions in your answer: “As I told John earlier, I worked on several projects that were similar in scope to yours…” As the interview winds down, ask if there is any information you can provide in addition to what you’ve discussed.   Look at each panelist and give the group time to think and answer.   The more relaxed and calm you appear at this stage, the more confident you’ll appear as a candidate.   Be sure to ask who will be your point of contact after the interview, and what the next steps will be.   Ask when you can follow up if you don’t hear about a decision.   Then warmly thank each panelist and shake hands again as you prepare to leave. If you have business cards, write a separate thank you for each panel member to be delivered with a day or two after your interview.   Make sure you get a business card from the lead interviewer, the person who served as host for the interview.   He or she should get a thank you right way. A faster and better way to recruit Extreme Interviewing - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog The way most companies recruit new people is in need of some serious improvement. Taking or not taking a job is a big decision, and yet you as an applicant are supposed to decide based on just one or two job interviews. The result is that when you show up for your first day at a new job you have little idea what the job, the manager or the co-workers are really like. You may be in for some surprises. Also, its difficult for a manager to know if shes hiring the right person, when all she has to go on is a CV, a personality test and one or two job interviews with that person. How can she know what this person is really like? Some people interview very poorly but are great to work with. Others seem charming, elouquent and competent in interviews, and then turn out to be not so great to work with. Theres gotta be a better way. This is why I was very happy to hear that the good people at Menlo Innovations in Ann Arbor, Michigan have found a way to hire people that is both faster and better than the traditional way. They call it Extreme Interviewing (a term theyve trademarked, btw). Its the coolest, most innovative way I have heard of to hire new people and the results are amazing! Read on to see how they do it. How to do Extreme Interviewing There are three basic principles in Extreme Interviewing. Drop the regular job interviews The first principle of Extreme Interviewing is to drop the idea of regular job interviews, and to instead recreate the actual work environment in the company as faithfully as possible for the candidates. This way, interviewers see the candidates in real working conditions and candidates get a feel for what working there is really like. Involve the existing team The second principle is to involve the existing team in recruting, rather than leaving it to HR and the manager. Existing team members are in a great position to evaulate the qualities of new co-workers after all, theyll be working with the ones that get hired. And theyll be picking up the slack, if the new hires are not up to snuff. Personality matters And the final principle, is to focus equally on personal skills and technical skills. A candidate may be a genius in his field, but to Menlo it matters more that she can communicate and teamwork well. Goals for recruting These are their goals when recruting: Dont just increase headcount, increase the teams output All too often, adding people to a project has a negative effect on productivity as the new people adapt. Productivity only increases much later. Get new hires up to speed quickly Help them throught the learning curve on Menlos products, technology and eXtreme Programming. Interview up to 50 applicants in one week Yes, you read that right. Continue work while interviewing Continue the work on existing projects while hiring. Now thats ambitious. Also, Menlo Innovations base their development work on the IT project model called eXtreme Programming (or XP) which is radically different from more traditional development methods and want to use the same principles when recruiting. Heres a previous post about XP and how it can be used in non-software projects. How to do Extreme Interviewing Heres how Menlo did it once, when they needed to hire 12 new developers all those new developers. 1: Find candidates HR worked with a consultant for two months to find suitable candidates. They did not focus on technical skills but on finding candidates with energy, enthusiasm, curiosity and an ability to communicate clearly. 50 people were invited to apply, and all suitable applicants had their first interview scheduled for the same time. 2: Involve the existing team in the process On the day before the first interview, twelve volunteers from the existing team were assembled to learn the interviewing process. The volunteers worked through the exercises that the candidates would be asked to perform so that they would be familiar with them They also reviewed the goal of the first interview: To identify candidates with good teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills. 3: First interview make your partner look good On the day of the first interview (a saturday) all the candidates appeared together. They were assembled, fed and given a short introduction to eXtreme Programming and to the company. They were told that they were not being evaluated on their programming talents in this round but only on their ability to think critically, ask good questions and finally on their ability to make their partner look good. They were then set to work on tasks that were very similar to normal work at Menlo, under the supervision of existing Menlo employees. Because all work in XP projects is done by two people working in pairs, the candidates were of course also working together in pairs. This exercise quickly revealed who was willing to help others and who just wanted to look good themselves. It also showed who was good at drawing on the knowledge of their partner to make even better decisions. During this twenty minute exercise the room was noisy and energetic, very much like Menlos normal working environment. At the end of the twenty-minute period candidates were brought back to a central seating area for instruction on the second exercise, while interviewers made quick notes about the interactions they had observed. After three exercises the interviewers sorted candidates into three groups: Poor teamwork skills, adequate teamwork skills and strong teamwork skills. The fifteen with the strongest teamwork skills were invited back for a second interview. 4: Second interview work on actual tasks at Menlo Second interviews were scheduled during normal working hours during the week that followed the first interviews. In this round, each applicant worked with an existing Menlo employee on actual tasks, allowing the interview team to assess the candidate without simply quizzing him or her. This gave the interviewers a great way to both assess a candidates technical skills and to get a sense for how that person would fit in at Menlo. The candidates also got another direct taste of what working at Menlo is like. 5: Making the decision Now it was time to decide on who to offer a job, and the team did this based on the question ?which of the candidates do you believe would make good pair-programming partners???? They quickly arrived at a ranking and the VP decided to make offers to the top eight candidates. Seven of the eight candidates accepted positions. Results The results were stunning: The new employees fit in quickly How quickly? Well, when Menlo repeated the process a month later with a new interview team consisting of veteran employees and some new hires, the candicates could not tell the new employees from the old timers. Also, after just six weeks, a new hire was skilled enough in the practices to mentor a new employee just joining the team. Low employee turnover There was only one developer lost to attrition during the life of the team. Reusing the process Menlo hired fourteen developers within two months using this process and six more later using a smaller variant of the process. It is also used in non-IT departments of Menlo Innovations. Making life easier Managers at Menlo called it a joy to manage and work with such a team. I stand in awe of this method for many reasons, particularly that: Its radical Its an almost total departure from the traditional hiring process. And of course we all know how well that works :o) Its consistent and congruent The whole hiring process is just an extension of the way they already work at Menlo, making it easier for the company to evaluate applicants and for applicants to know if they will fit in. Its inclusive Existing employees who want to particpate get to help select their new co-workers. It emphasizes people skills Because team working skills and personality are as important as technical skills. Its efficient You get a huge number of interviews done with relatively few ressources. It works And it works much better than the traditional way. Richard Sheridan, the founder of Menlo pioneered this approach in his previous job as a VP at Interface Systems. Back then, a team member asked him about the success of this process, saying Rich, you couldnt have know it was going to be such a success when you started this change process. Why were you willing to take such a risk? Richs answer was simple: When you realize that the risk of changing is far less than the risk of staying the same, dramatic change is actually easy. And most importantly, for my money, employees love working for Menlo. A typical phrase is its fun being us!. Parallels in other companies The method reminds me of two similar practices by higly successful companies: Southwest Airlines and their motto Hire for attitude train for skill is a lot like Menlos focus on communication and cooperation skills first and technical skills second. This makes excellent sense considering the need for effective teamwork experienced by all companies today. Semco (a Sao Paulo-based company with 3.000 employees) also do group interviews. They get all the applicants together at the same time and they are then interviewed by a group of Semco employees who choose who to hire. They even let employees choose their own bosses in this way. This shows that what we have here is an approach to hiring that is better, more efficient and cheaper than the regular way. Maaaaybe it would be worth trying it out at your company? Now, we’re going to take a look at two more types of Australian Police Officer Test. These are:The Audio/Visual Test;The Literacy Test.The Audio/Visual Test â€" More Types of Australian Police Officer TestsIn the audio/visual test, you will be expected to watch and listen to a piece of video. Generally speaking, this video is about 10 minutes in length. Once you’ve watched the video, you’ll be required to answer a series of questions based on the footage.This means that you will have to remember important details from the footage. This could include questions such as:“What was the colour of the car being driven in the video?”“How many people were waiting at the bus stop?”“What did the man being interviewed say his name was?”“How many times did the car stop during the footage?”Audio/Visual Test Tips â€" More Types of Australian Police Officer TestsAs you can see, you could be asked a range of different questions about the footage you’ve watched. To make sure that you succeed in this exercise, we’ve included a few useful tips to give you an advantage.Try not to focus on one particular aspect of the footage. While there might be central event in the video, the assessors are looking to see how well you can take in a wider range of information. There might be one very obvious part of the footage, such as a near-collision between two cars on the road. While you may be asked about the cars involved in the near-incident, you’ll more likely be asked details such as “How many people were walking along the road at the time of the incident?”If you’re allowed to take notes, make sure to write down as much as possible.Categorise objects such as “Car 1 = Red, 4 doors”, “Car 2 = Black, 2 doors” and so on.Make sure your note-taking is concise â€" don’t worry about full-sentences during the note-writing stage!If you can’t think o f the answer to the question because it’s something you can’t recall, don’t panic. Move onto the next question. If you’re allowed to go back to previous questions, later questions might jog your memory.To test yourself for this assessment, try watching Hazard Perception videos online.The Literacy Test â€" More Types of Australian Police Officer TestsThis is one of the Australian Police Officer tests that assesses your ability to read and interpret information.Answer the questions based solely on the information provided. Candidates who sit verbal reasoning tests often fall into the trap of answering the question based on fact, rather than answering the question based solely on the information provided in the text. The type of question you are likely to encounter will involve a passage of text followed by a series of questions which must be answered either TRUE, FALSE, or CANNOT SAY based on the information given.Here’s an example of how people fall foul of the CANNOT SAY o ption:Read the following text before answering the question as either TRUE, FALSE or CANNOT SAY based on the information provided.A uniform is a set of standard clothing worn by members of an organisation whilst participating in that organisation’s activity.  Modern uniforms are worn by armed forces and paramilitary organisations such as; police, emergency services and security guards, in some workplaces and schools and by inmates in prisons. In some countries, officials also wear uniforms in some of their duties; such is the case of the Commissioned Corps of the United States Public Health Service or the French Prefects.  Q. Police officers are required to wear a uniform.The answer to the question is CANNOT SAY based on the information provided. Many candidates will answer this question as TRUE; simply because we all know that police officers do in fact wear a uniform. Crucially, the word ‘required’ is not mentioned in the passage. The important lesson here is to only answer the question based solely on the information provided, regardless of what you know to be fact.Here’s a quick refresher on what is meant by TRUE, FALSE, and CANNOT SAY in the context of the Literacy test.TRUE â€" If a statement is ‘true’, then it can be verified by the text. This means that the text must explicitly or implicitly mention something which proves the statement to be correct. In other words, you cannot make any assumptions about the text. There must either be direct evidence for the statement, or a strong inference to support the statement.FALSE â€" If a statement is ‘false’, there must be evidence in the text which contradicts the statement. For example, if the question statement says ‘all swans are white’, but the text says ‘there is such a thing as a black swan’, then the statement is false because it is directly contradicted by the text.CANNOT SAY â€" If there is not enough evidence to verify that the statement is true or false, then the correct ans wer is ‘cannot say’. Simply put, this means that you cannot say the statement is true or false based on the information provided in the passage.Conclusion â€" More Types of Australian Police Officer TestsThere you have it: two more types of Australian Police Officer Tests.
